The Shipwreck of the La Galga and the Legend of the Chincoteague Ponies
The famed ponies of Asseateague and Chincoteague barrier islands on the coast of Maryland and Virginia are drawn from descriptions of the legend of Spanish horses swimming ashore from the sinking Spanish frigate "La Galga" after it hit a sand bar during a hurricane in September 1750.
The signed and titled black and white offset lithographs by Ellen Rice shown here fit 11" x 14" ready made frames, including their white margins, or can be custom framed (recommended). One hand watercolored offset lithograph of the sinking of the "La Galga" is available.
The original drawing was the basis for the scene's depiction on Rice's globally collected Treasure Beaches of the Mid-Atlantic map.
